Some people bring old bicycles to sell at the yearly swap, while others hope to pick up a good deal on a used bike. The swap is from noon to 4 p.m. Saturday at The Grove, 1175 East Main St. The event will feature bicycle stunt riders and racing events as well as food vendors. Admission is $2. A portion of proceeds will go to the Ashland Bicycle Education Program, which encourages bicycling safety and education at Ashland Middle School and in city elementary schools. "Our mission is to help promote cycling and pedestrian safety in the city," said Ashland Bike and Pedestrian Commissioner John Baxter. "We thought the bike swap was a really great event that helps people learn more about bicycles." Advertisement For 12 years, the bike swap was organized by the Ashland Schools Foundation as a school fund-raiser. In 2002, the foundation turned it over to a bicycle promotion group, and then it was on the verge of ending altogether. This year, the Bike and Pedestrian Commission joined at the last minute with Ashland Cycle Sport, Second Gear Cyclery, Full Circle Sports, the Rogue Valley Transportation District and the Ashland Daily Tidings to sponsor the event. "There really wasn't going to be a bike swap," Baxter said. "But we decided to do it at the last minute. It's a great place to get kids’ bikes if you have a growing family, or buy road bikes, mountain bikes, accessories and occasionally a tandem or two." People may check in bikes for sale from 7 to 11 a.m. Saturday. The swap will include a raffle at 1:30 p.m. for a Fuji hybrid bike, a Trek mountain bike and two mountain bike wheel sets. Swap admission includes one raffle ticket. Call 552-9442 for information.
