Since You Asked: Zundel sex abuse trial scheduled for April 25 Wednesday Jan 25, 2017 at 12:01 AM I haven't heard anything about the public school official from Crater accused of sexual abuse with a student. Do you know where the case stands? — Concerned citizen, via email   The case of Jeffrey Robert Zundel, a former Crater Renaissance Academy English and humanities teacher who was accused of having sexual intercourse with an underage student during the spring of 2015, is still winding its way through the courts. His jury trial, which was first set for May 2016, then rescheduled to December 2016, has been rescheduled again — to April 25, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records. The continuance was allowed because Lisa Maxfield, one of Zundel's defense attorneys, was involved in a lengthy federal case and would not have had time to prepare for a December trial, records show. Zundel's other defense attorney is Jeni Feinberg. The jury trial is expected to take three days.  Zundel, who had taught English, world studies and photojournalism at Crater Renaissance Academy, entered not guilty pleas in November to 11 felony charges alleging sexual intercourse and sexual contact with a girl younger than 18 between March 1 and June 9, 2015. Zundel had taught at the school for the 1986-87 school years and from 2004 until December 2015, when the Central Point School Board unanimously fired him "for gross neglect of duty and gross unfitness for duty." He was arrested Oct. 26 after a sexual misconduct investigation at the school and has been out on bail. In March, the court granted Zundel a travel permit to go to Los Angeles with his children and wife, Michelle Zundel, chief academic officer with the Medford School District and former Ashland High School principal.
