BURGLARY Two weekend tool thefts rack up $35,000 price tag Comment By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil MailTribune.com By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Jan. 4, 2016 at 11:34 AM By Ryan Pfeil Mail Tribune Follow @@RyanPfeil Posted Jan. 4, 2016 at 11:34 AM » Social News Burglars made off with about $35,000 worth of tools in two separate thefts in Medford over New Year's weekend, and police think the crimes are linked. The first burglary was reported at 8:38 a.m. New Year's Day at a home in the 1500 block of North Phoenix Road. Police said burglars smashed the window on a Cornwell Tools company truck parked in the driveway in the early-morning hours and made off with $25,000 worth of tools. The stolen property included heavy-duty diagnostic scanning devices, drivers, ratchets, drills, wrench sets and LED flashlights. "That particular residence has been targeted multiple times for similar thefts," said Medford police Lt. Mike Budreau, adding the previous incidents involved thieves stealing packages delivered to the house's front door over the past year. Police responded to the second burglary at 8:56 a.m. Saturday at Real Performance Automotive, in the 700 block of South Grape Street. Investigators believe the suspects broke in between the night of Dec. 31 and the morning of Jan. 2, forcing entry through a locked rear door and stealing $10,000 worth of Snap-on tools. Budreau said tools are hot items for burglars, because they can easily be traded or sold on the black market. They are also difficult to track because they seldom carry serial numbers. Two large-scale burglaries of tools in one weekend is unusual, he said, leading police to believe they were committed by the same suspect or suspects. "It's happened in my career, but it's very rare," Budreau said. "I have no doubt the suspect was after, specifically, tools." Police are looking at surveillance footage from nearby cameras. "I know it looks promising in one of the cases," Budreau said of the video search. Anyone with information on either burglary is asked to call Medford police at 541-770-4784.
