MEN'S BASKETBALL Coyotes hold off SOU for championship College of Idaho keeps in tact its two-year home win streak, 86-79 By SOU Sports Information MailTribune.com By SOU Sports Information Posted Mar. 4, 2015 @ 2:00 am By SOU Sports Information Posted Mar. 4, 2015 @ 2:00 am » Social News p bs:newslist StartDate="20121121" EndDate="p bs:datecalc Months="3"" DateSort="1" UseObjects="1" ObjectClass="81" Taxonomywords="2325,665" ExactTaxonomyMatch="1" Image="1" Count="4" --> CALDWELL, Idaho — Southern Oregon's fiery second-half performance Tuesday night was enough to wipe out a 12-point deficit, but not enough to end College of Idaho's two-year home win streak and capture a Cascade Conference championship. Demetrius Perkins's clutch shooting gave the sixth-ranked Coyotes an 86-79 win over the 23rd-ranked Raiders in the title game of the CCC Championships, their 34th straight at the J.A. Albertson Activities Center. Tied at 71-all with 4:48 to play, Emanuel Morgan came up with a steal and found a streaking Perkins in the corner for a 3-pointer that became a four-point play. SOU's Jordan West responded with a jumper, but Perkins came down and drilled another from downtown to put C of I in control. Fourth-seeded SOU (24-9 overall) — which trailed 44-32 at halftime — is still in favorable position to land an at-large bid when the 32-team NAIA Division II Championship field is announced today. The top-seeded Yotes (28-5) already had an automatic berth locked up for sharing the regular-season title and winning the tiebreaker. Concordia gets the CCC's second automatic berth for earning the No. 2 seed during the regular season. C of I has won two straight CCC regular-season and tournament championships. West went 7-for-8 to score 15 of his game-high 21 points in the second half, while Raider forward Eric Thompson scored 13 of his 16 before the break. Thompson added five rebounds and four assists. Joel Spear had 14 points and four assists, going 4-for-4 from 3-point range with a couple big ones to keep SOU within striking distance in the first half. Ben DeSaulnier and Thompson launched the second half with 3-pointers in what would become SOU's 18-for-28 performance from the field during the period. The Raiders shot 54 percent for the game. Trailing 67-58 with 9:43 left, SOU ran off nine straight points to finally tie it. The teams locked up again at 71-all when West scored in the paint, and SOU then had the chance to take its first lead since the early going before a turnover led to the four-point play. Leading 79-77 with 1:23 to go, C of I scored the next seven points to put it away. Perkins finished with 17 points, eight rebounds and six assists. Four other Yotes joined him in double figures: Sydney Donaldson (15), Jordan O'Byrne (14), Joe Vaz (12) and Marko Kovacevic (11). O'Byrne made his first four 3-point tries, including three in the first half. The Yotes shot 50 percent overall and 10-for-21 from beyond the arc. SOU's Tim Weber registered 10 points, eight assists and six rebounds. If the Raiders get into the national tournament, it will mark their second appearance in three years. The Yotes made it last year as the No. 3 seed but were upset in the first round by host College of the Ozarks. The tourney is March 11-17 in Point Lookout, Mo.
