Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend July 25, 2005 Police Taser halts suicidal man An apparently suicidal man who threatened to jump to his death Sunday from Interstate 5 on the Medford viaduct was subdued by a police officer with a stun gun and taken into protective custody following a 20-minute standoff, officials said. The 34-year-old Medford resident challenged officers to shoot him while he stood on the viaduct above Jackson Street, according to an Oregon State Police news release. Jackson Street and the southbound lanes of I-5 were temporarily blocked while officers negotiated with the man, police said. Medford police had been looking for the man earlier in the day after receiving a report that he was suicidal. When officers contacted the man on the viaduct at about 2:20 p.m., he was in possession of a razor blade and had self-inflicted cuts on his arms, police said. Medford police officer Greg Lemhouse said another Medford officer used a Taser stun gun on the man when he ran toward a retaining wall, apparently intent on jumping from the viaduct onto Jackson Street. The man was taken by ambulance to Rogue Valley Medical Center, where he will undergo a mental evaluation, police said. The man’s name was not released Sunday by police officials.
