RAIDERS ROUNDUP Thompson helps SOU slide by Simpson Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Nov. 26, 2014 at 2:00 AM Posted Nov. 26, 2014 at 2:00 AM » Social News REDDING, Calif. — All five of Southern Oregon’s starters scored in double figures Tuesday night, but Eric Thompson couldn’t help being the story again in the Raiders’ 85-74 men’s basketball win at Simpson that made them 7-1 on the season. Thompson torched the Redhawks for the second time this season with 30 points, going 10-for-17 from the field with six 3-pointers and 10 rebounds to help the 17th-ranked Raiders pull away late. SOU built an early 22-9 lead that collapsed by the break, as Anthony Williams made three free throws with time expired for a 38-37 Simpson edge. A 13-2 Raider run, capped by two Thompson triples and then a Tim Weber three-point play, had SOU up 70-58 with five minutes left. Weber, who three weeks ago had a triple-double against the Redhawks in a 90-78 SOU overtime victory, was everywhere again with 15 points, nine rebounds and five assists. Point guard Joel Spear added 14 points, eight rebounds and three assists, Jordan West had 14 points and four rebounds and Jacob Kaler chimed in with 12 points and five boards. The Raider bench went scoreless and accounted for just one field-goal attempt on a 54-percent night from the field (30-for-56). Thompson, who scored 17 points in the second half, now has four double-doubles this season and a pair of 30-point games in his last three. He’s also made over half his shots in each of the last five games and totaled 27 points and 12 boards the first time around against Simpson. FOOTBALL: Southern Oregon University is inviting up to 80 parents, boosters and fans to join the university in supporting the team for this weekend’s SOU Playoff Experience. Participants are invited to join the team on a two-hour charter flight Friday to Helena, Mont. They will be transported to the team hotel and are invited to meet up with SOU fans prior to Saturday’s NAIA Championship Series quarterfinal game between the eighth-ranked Raiders and top-ranked Carroll, which kicks off at noon local time. The two-hour flight leaves from Medford to Helena at 6 a.m. Friday. The return flight, coming directly to Medford, will take off promptly following the conclusion of the game. Participants will need to make their own hotel reservations at the team hotel, which are available for $95 per night through the Holiday Inn in Helena. Friday evening hotel accommodations can be made by contacting Denise Trautman (406-443-2200 x186) or Karlee Flemming (406-443-2200 x181) at the Holiday Inn. Meals are not included. If you are interested in flying to Helena with the team and participating in the SOU Playoff Experience, please contact Natasha Ford (541-552-6772) or email Bobby Heiken at [email protected] by 5 p.m. today to make arrangements. The Raider Club kindly urges that a donation of $500 or more be made for each person traveling with the team. These donations can be made through the SOU Athletic Department and will be deposited in the Raider Club account in the University Foundation. Each donation will support SOU athletic programs. Tickets for the game can be purchased through the Carroll College ticket office at 406-447-4480. CROSS COUNTRY: After coming home from Saturday’s NAIA Championships with four All-Americans, the national office announced this week that Southern Oregon’s cross country teams landed four student-athletes on its Daktronics-NAIA Scholar Athlete list. Eric Ghelfi and Hayden Teachout represented the Raider men’s team, and Rebecca Lupescu and Jessie Rozario were recognized from the women’s team. In order to be eligible for the award, one must have a minimum grade-point average of 3.5 and junior or senior academic status. Ghelfi and Lupescu made the list last year, too.
