In Oregon and other states, there have been campaigns to put state-specific warning labels on GMO foods. GMOs have been studied extensively and deemed safe by thousands of scientists around the world. Farmers grow GMO crops to improve yields while providing environmental benefits like using less water, less tillage, and less tractor driving, which decreases greenhouse gas emissions. With state-specific labeling laws, local farmers would be forced to separate GMO crops from other crops; manufacturers would have to establish different warehouses for GMO foods; and retailers would need to certify private GMO labels for specific states. This would mean higher costs for shoppers. A Cornell University economist estimated that state-mandated GMO labeling would cost an additional $500 per year for a family of four. Congress is considering the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act, legislation that will create a uniform, consumer-friendly labeling system based on sound science. It creates a voluntary standard for labeling products “GMO free,” similar to labeling organic food. But it would not impact local and state regulations on GMO farming. Join me and ask Congress to pass the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act now. Dalton Straus Central Point It's the Democrats "Oregon business startups at 40-year low." Regarding the above story in the July 20 edition, it is pretty obvious to me why Oregon has “reached” this 40-year low. How many years have the Democrats/Progressives been in control of this state? They have regulated and taxed the economy in such way to discourage entrepreneurship. I think you will find a direct correlation between their years in office and the decline of new business startups. Allan W. Stewart Brookings Thanks to Homebuilders On behalf of the foster and adoptive children of Jackson County, I would like to thank one of our community partners who has helped to make a difference in the lives of abused and neglected children in Southern Oregon. On July 18, 2015, the Jackson County Homebuilders Association hosted a picnic for over 150 people. Foster and adopted children and families enjoyed a barbecue, water spray park, prizes from “fishing,” face painting and the tremendous hospitality and generosity of these men and women. Thank you so much to these fine people who are making a difference in the lives of children. Penny Esser Medford Weep for the country I read the story of Sandra Bland's death in Texas and I cried. I wept for the loss of this beautiful young woman and for her friends and family. I wept for my illusion that things were much better in America's race relations. I wept for our society's loss of the potential this woman had to contribute to our society. Most of all, I wept for my country.
