Vineyard managers got a good look at their vineyards Monday, and their crops were still intact. "I looked at vineyards near Ashland, the Applegate and Upper Rogue and didn't see any hail damage and didn't hear reports," said Herb Quady, who manages a range of vineyards in the region. "If it would've hit the area more sustained, the timing would've been perfect for destruction," Quady said. "This time of the year, the shoots are very tender and easily broken off." Thunderstorms that sometimes roll through Southern Oregon during July and August often pelt vineyards and orchards with varying degrees of harm. "Later storms can damage clusters or leaves, but this would've taken whole shoots off along with young primordial clusters," he said. "They can still form clusters, but the secondary shoots won't be as fruitful." Randy Gold, who oversees multiple vineyards, including RoxyAnn Winery's vineyards in east Medford, said the hail was light enough to avoid damage. "It's unusual to get hail this time of year," he said. "It's more usual to have damage in late summer." Jamie McCleary at Jaxon Vineyards east of Phoenix said there was no major damage from the hail or wind. "It was hailing from Jacksonville to Talent at one point, but what we got was pretty small," said McCleary, as he inspected his tempranillo vines.
