Bishop, Twitchell among honorees of Arts Council Longtime Mail Tribune editor Cleve Twitchell, the Rogue Opera and Ashland High School teacher Betsy Bishop were among arts award winners announced by the Arts Council of Southern Oregon. Other awards went to the American Trails Gallery in Ashland, Evergreen Federal Savings and Loan in Grants Pass and the Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon. The awards are given annually to individuals and groups for outstanding contributions to the arts in Southern Oregon. The awards will be presented Oct. 3 at ACSO�s annual awards dinner at the Sweet Acres Country Barn in Medford. Patsy Smullin, of California-Oregon Broadcasting, will be master of ceremonies. Twitchell, of Central Point, was named Individual of the Year. At the Mail Tribune since 1961, Twitchell founded the newspaper�s Tempo arts and entertainment guide, which he edits. He�s held many jobs at the paper, including managing editor, but is perhaps best known for his weekly dining column. He has written extensively about the arts in the Rogue Valley for many years. The Rogue Opera, winner of the Nonprofit Arts Organization Award, has presented operas locally since 1977. Each year it takes shows in condensed versions into public schools. Bishop, ACSO�s Art Teacher of the Year, teaches drama at Ashland High School. She was instrumental in getting AHS in the Manhattan Theater Club�s Theater-Link Internet program for students. She organized a thespian conference that drew 700 students to Ashland. The Small Arts Business Award went to American Trails, a gallery on the Plaza in Ashland that specializes in American Indian and wildlife art and jewelry. Owner David Bobb is also a founding member of the Ashland Gallery Association. He�s known as an environmental activist and has served on the board of Oregon State University�s Center of the Study of the First Americans. The Large Business Award went to Evergreen for its involvement in the Rogue Music Theatre, Josephine County Parks and the Grants Pass Museum of Art. Evergreen is developing an Art Along the Rogue project and other projects aiding area artists. ACSO�s Arts Education Group nod goes to The Youth Symphony of Southern Oregon. The music group began in 1988 and now boasts three separate groups serving more than 140 young musicians. Cynthia Hutton is in her fifth year as music director and conductor.
