She had a respectable basketball career at Eagle Point, becoming a regular in the Mail Tribune All-Star Classic. But since then, Johnson’s become hard to forget at the College of the Siskiyous in Weed, Calif. “In my opinion she’s maybe been the best player since I’ve been here,” College of the Siskiyous head coach Tom Powers said. Considering Powers has been at the school for more than 30 years, that’s saying something. The 6-foot sophomore power forward averaged 21.5 points per game — the fifth most in the 89-school California Community College Athletic Association — while shooting an association-best 64.4 percent from the field. Johnson also averaged 9.5 rebounds, 2.4 assists and 2.2 steals while knocking down 127 of her 171 free-throw attempts (good for 11th in the CCCAA) as a full-time starter. She was named to the Northern California All-State first team, a close second in voting to player of the year Morgan Green (a Chabot College standout who signed with Michigan State), and was the Golden Valley Conference player of the year. With the 19-year-old Johnson leading the way, the Eagles (26-3) conquered the seven-team league with a 10-0 record and advanced to the third round of the CCCAA Northern California Regional before falling to Diablo Valley, 89-76. Johnson erupted for a career-high 44 points in an earlier contest against Diablo Valley on Dec. 5. “It was a really fun season,” Johnson said. “I wish we could have gone farther but it was a great experience.” Another local — former Phoenix High rebounding-machine Baylee Toney — averaged 14.9 points, 8.3 rebounds, two assists and 2.6 steals as a freshman for Shasta College (12-13, 4-6 GVC). She knocked down 17 3s in her final three games. Toney, who averaged 19.7 points during league play, was a first-team all-conference pick. Toney shuffled positions and roles during the year, evolving from a power forward to shooting guard out of necessity. The shift was a major one for her, coming from a prep background where she specialized in crashing the boards. Having good teammates helped, she said. “My good friend Ashley Rothmann, our starting point guard, and I became best friends right off the bat and we had really good chemistry on and off the court,” Toney said. “Having a point guard that knows your style helps so much.” As Toney gears up for her sophomore campaign, Johnson is hoping to catch the attention of NCAA Division I programs by working out at several showcases. She has mostly generated interest from D2 programs so far, she said. Last winter, Johnson was the league MVP and a second-team all-state selection while leading the CCCAA in field-goal percentage. “She’s one of the most athletic gals in the state,” said Powers. “It ended up where nobody could really stop her. The hardest thing was to slow her down. … She just doesn’t miss a lot. She gets to the rim and is just a great all-around kind of player.” And Johnson didn’t stop at basketball, either. Valuing some of the same skills she used on the hardwood, Johnson was ninth in the conference in kills in volleyball and made a splash in high hurdles last spring at College of the Siskiyous. “It was a good way to work out and get stronger,” Johnson said of her other athletic pursuits. School in Weed, Calif., will wrap up in May, and Johnson said she plans to keep on training after graduation to remain in game shape. Looking back, she’s amazed at how much she’s grown as a basketball player and as a person. “I have definitely changed and matured a lot,” Johnson said. “I have a new outlook.” Reach reporter Dan Jones at 541-776-4499, or email [email protected].
