He was born November 11, 1920, in Bucharest, Romania, to Ion and Marie Edeleanu. He was the eldest of three brothers, who remained close all their lives. At the age of 19, Alex left Romania to study abroad at the University of Geneva in Switzerland. With the war breaking out in Europe, he made his way to New York and then on to Northwestern University in Evanston, Ill. where he earned his BS degree in Chemistry. Alex entered the U.S. Army in 1942 and became a naturalized citizen in 1943. He served four years, primarily with the OSS in South East Asia. Following his military service, Alex returned to Northwestern for his MS degree in Chemical Engineering. He began his long career in the oil industry with CALTEX in New York before joining Standard Oil of California. He spent much of his time with Chevron Research in the area of refinery technology, while based in Geneva, in Richmond and San Francisco, and in London. On June 17, l948, he married U.S. Navy veteran Janet Frances Brown, and together they had two children, John Edeleanu and Anne (Edeleanu) Scott, who were born in Berkeley, Calif.  During their 54 year marriage, Alex and Jan enjoyed living abroad, including 11 years in Geneva and 10 years in London. They traveled widely to places all over the world and in later years, they particularly enjoyed boat trips in Russia, Baja California, and in the US. After Janet's passing, Alex moved to Charlottesville, Virginia and enjoyed making new friends at University Village. Alex is survived by his children, John of Charlottesville, Va., and Anne (Bob) Scott of Medford; by grandchildren, Jessica (Gary) Reed of Medford, Alexandra (Hiroshi) Parker of Charlottesville, Melanie (Tate) Robbins of Bellingham, Wash., and Christian Edeleanu of Charlottesville; and by three great-grandchildren, Keith and Katelynn Reed and Hayes Parker; by his brother Ion-Dan (Doreen) Edeleanu of Gravesend, England; and by nieces Andrea, Susan, Judy, and Louise; and nephew Hugh, as well as many cousins and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his parents; his brother, Costi Edeleanu; niece, Claire Edeleanu; nephew, Nicholas Edeleanu; and by his beloved wife, Janet. A private ceremony with military honors will be held October 27, 2014 at the Eagle Point National Cemetery, with a memorial service at 3:00pm on Saturday, October 25, at Bear Creek Church in Medford. In lieu of flowers, gifts can be made to Hospices of Hope, Romania, at 29 Dickinson Ave, Nyack, NY 10960.
