Week in religion The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints church acknowledged via a recent essay published on its official website that its founder, Joseph Smith, had a 14-year-old bride. The article also confirmed that Smith was married to other men’s wives, the first time the church has commented on polygamy in the early days of the Mormon faith. Though polygamy was a common practice in the church’s early days, the practice has been outlawed in the U.S. since 1890.
