By JONEL ALECCIA Mail Tribune There was a time when most Rogue Valley families lived by the cycle of the harvest. The rhythm of bounty and need was familiar to all. If a neighbor required help during a lean winter, chances are, it was provided. Today, the seasonal cycle is left largely to Hispanic farmworkers, says Nicki Stroo, president of the Ashland Emergency Food Bank. Advertisement Those workers toil during the busy harvest season, but often struggle to find work in the fallow winter. Eight years ago, the Hermanos program was organized to help such families make ends meet during the winter months. Last year, more than 60 families received grocery gift certificates that helped them stretch their budget. This year, the Food Bank and the St. Vincent de Paul program of Our Lady of the Mountain Catholic Church in Ashland are teaming up to serve Hispanic farmworkers in the Rogue Valley. Together, staffers will make home visits to workers to offer food and concern. This holiday season, the Hermanos project is seeking donations of grocery certificates to help ensure everyone gets help. Contributions can be made to the Ashland Emergency Food Bank, with "Hermanos" noted on the memo portion of the check.
