WHAT: Has been a referee for 16 years, the past half-dozen seasons in the Pac-10 Conference. OF NOTE: Has worked four bowl games, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl in the Georgia Dome in Atlanta. It was the first time the game was held outside New Orleans, the result of Hurricane Katrina. » Social News A school principal during the week. An NCAA football referee on the weekend. From Aaron Santi's employment profile, you might think: Here's a guy who likes to be in charge and can stand the heat. And you'd be right. "I do enjoy a certain level of responsibility, and I'm certainly not opposed to being involved in pressure-packed or contentious situations," says Santi, 33, principal of Talent Elementary since last year. He has refereed football for 16 seasons, the last six with the Pac-10. At both jobs, he is the one who must remain calm in very emotional situations. "If everybody gets out of hand, nothing gets done," says Santi, an expert at turning his back on 265-pound tight ends, irate because they didn't get a pass interference call in the end zone. Defusing an angry mom, whose son got tackled on the playground, is no easy task either. But at least you don't have thousands of fans mad at you along with her. "At a USC game at the (Los Angeles) Coliseum, there might be 92,000 people in the stands," says Santi, who has learned to block out the thunderous noise. "Once the game starts, you really don't notice all the outside stuff," he says — though he still gets as tingly as a rookie before the opening kickoff. "It's a real adrenaline rush to run out on the field in this incredibly charged atmosphere. You can feel the place vibrating," he says. As a downfield official, specifically a side judge, Santi's responsibilities include monitoring the passing game and the receivers. As any fan knows, a single pass interference call, or non-call, can change the tide of a game. "Downfield officials have fewer calls, but they are typically very weighty," says Santi, who realizes that, once he throws the penalty flag, the scrutiny begins. "We're scrutinized by television, by fans, by the coaches," he says. Kids who hate seeing their school performance rated on a report card need only to listen to what this principal goes through at his part-time job to gain perspective. Says Santi, "We get a game report at the end of each game that could be 10 pages long, on everything we did or didn't do. Our supervisor grades every call and no call. We're rated on our performance, and our grades determine bowl-game assignments and whether we get fired." Santi began making calls as a teenager, when he took up Little League umpiring as a way to earn some money. His dad, a longtime football and baseball official, got him interested. An athlete while in high school, he committed himself to officiating when his playing days were over. Santi is proud to have worked four bowl games, including the 2006 Sugar Bowl, when No. 11 West Virginia upset No. 8 Georgia, 38-35. The game was moved from the Louisiana Superdome to the Georgia Dome in Atlanta after Hurricane Katrina. Was that the biggest game of his career? "Bowl games and important conference games generate a lot of excitement, but, really, every game is important," he replies. "Coaches' jobs are on the line." With the stakes so high, officiating crews always want to call a perfect game. But so far, no crew has achieved that goal, says Santi. And when mistakes happen, "Nobody is harder on us than ourselves," he says. "It's a really, really bad feeling when you go back to the hotel room and you know that you missed a call. Even worse when that call shows up on ESPN," says Santi. Returning to school on Monday, far from the frenzied crowd, Santi must merely be the problem-solver, decision-maker and conflict-breaker for about 450 students and 50 faculty and staff. The Talent Elementary job is his first principal's assignment, but he had definitely been battle-tested before accepting the position. "Officiating has been a great training ground for me in dealing with difficult issues here at school," he says. Paul Hadella is a freelance writer living in Talent.
