Do pedestrians have to follow the street signs? Many times, pedestrians start their stroll with a "Don’t Walk" signal showing, which makes it more difficult for drivers to safely stop and let them pass. — J. Helton, Central Point If a pedestrian ignores the "Don’t Walk" or red-hand signal when a police officer is in the vicinity, they could be issued a ticket for their illegal walking, according to state law. Medford police Lt. Tim George said officers do not hesitate to cite pedestrians who fail to obey traffic-control devices (Oregon Revised Statutes 814.020). George explained that the city’s pedestrian-enforcement "sting" operations are conducted only at uncontrolled intersections — where traffic signals are absent. At uncontrolled intersections, pedestrians commit the offense of failure to yield to a vehicle when they cause an "immediate hazard" by stepping off a curb and into the path of an oncoming vehicle (ORS 814.040).
