South Medford wrestlers triumph over Ashland South Medford gave first-year wrestling coach Ken Thompson a victory Thursday in his Southern Oregon Conference opener with the Panthers. South downed Ashland, 47-30. The match began at 152 pounds, and South promptly recorded back-to-back falls. Panther Dan Swift pinned Casey Handler in 1:43 at 152, and teammate Alex Brummer followed at 160 against Mike Tucker in 3:23. After a technical fall from Kevin O'Shea at 171, South didn't win another match on the mat - it did receive three forfeits - until Mike Parsley and Matt McCoy pulled off consecutive pins in the last two matches, 140 and 145. "We started strong and ended strong," said Thompson, "but the middle was a little iffy." Ashland got falls from Josh Smith at 119 and Skyler Case at 130 and decisions from Adam Kroshrabadi (130) and Nathan Marshall (135). Girls Basketball CRATER 73, MADERA 54 - At Pleasanton, Calif., Amy Denson had a career-high 30 points, 12 rebounds and eight steals to power Crater in the first round of the Amador Basketball Classic. Sarah Pool added 16 points and seven assists in a game marred by 58 turnovers, including 32 by Madera. Crater (2-0) faces J.F. Kennedy at 6 tonight. The Comets defeated JFK by 19 points in a tournament last year. JFK is led by 6-foot-6 Dedra Chapman, who has signed a letter of intent to attend Virginia. Hersom, a 6-foot-3 senior post, scored 17 points and pulled down 22 rebounds as the Loggers pulled away from a one-point game at the half. Tony Beals added 15 points and nine rebounds, while Isaac Stephenson had 11 points and eight steals. Joel Silverman led the Ashland C team with 16 points.
