Golf Digest ranked all four of the courses among the top 15 public courses in the United States. Pacific Dunes ranked second on the list, trailing only famed Pebble Beach Golf Links. The second of the resort's four courses had been in that spot in the magazine's 2007, 2009 and 2011 rankings before dropping behind Whistling Straits in Wisconsin when Golf Digest ranked the public courses in 2013. But it returned to No. 2 this year with high praise from the magazine. “Holes seem to emerge from the landscape rather than being superimposed onto it,” Golf Digest wrote on its webpage. “The rollling greens and rumpled fairways are framed by rugged sand dunes and marvelously grotesque bunkers.” Bandon Dunes, which has been as high as No. 5 on the list (in 2011), came in at No. 7. “Maybe not as visually mesmerizing as Whistling Straits … but talented golfers consider Bandon Dunes to be the consummate shotmaker's course, as good a total examination of one's game as there is in America,” Golf Digest wrote. Old Macdonald, the resort's newest course, was ranked 12th, the same spot it held in 2013 when it debuted on the list. The magazine said it expects Old Macdonald to eventually become the resort's most popular course “mainly because it has wide fairways and generous greens.” Bandon Trails, the resort's third course, was tied for 14th with Karsten Creek in Oklahoma. It's the highest the course has been ranked (it also held the same ranking in 2009 and 2011) and the magazine compared it favorably with Spyglass Hill, another of the Pebble Beach Courses, which is ranked 11th. “Bandon Trails is much like Spyglass Hill on the Monterey Peninsula, not directly adjactent to the Pacific Ocean, but still a tremendous romp through coastal terrain,” the magaazine wrote. “Its opening and finishing holes are in more rugged sand dunes than Spyglass, and while its forest holes might lack the towering drama of the Monterey pines found at Spyglass, the tumbling topography of Bandon Trails provides a majesty all its own.” Golf Digest also ranks a 100 greatest courses, a list which includes the private facilities and lists Augusta National in Georgia first. All four of the courses at Bandon Dunes also were in the 100 greatest courses, the only Oregon courses to achieve that honor. Four other Oregon courses made the top-11 public list. Pacific Dunes was 18th, Bandon Dunes 37th, Old Macdonald 55th and Bandon Trails 74th. The resort's courses also have traditionally ranked well in other publications. Last fall, Golf Magazine published its list “The top 100 courses you can play,” it's public course rankings, and put Pacific Dunes at No. 1, ahead of Pebble Beach. Golf Magazine had Bandon Dunes at No. 8, Old Macdonald at No. 10 and Bandon Trails at No. 13. Golf Magazine also included a state-by-state list and had Bandon Crossings, a public course south of town, at No. 14.
