"Dakota Fred," from the reality television show "Gold Rush," will be on hand all three days to demonstrate gold-panning, pose for pictures and reminisce about mining during this 16th annual iteration of the outdoor show. Also starring in this weekend's show are the massive black bears from Bob Steele's Great Bear Show, which includes presentations to entertain and educate visitors about black bear habits, habitats and how best to handle an unlikely encounter with a bear. The Seven Feathers Big Game Room will host the 12th annual Head & Horns Competition, Legends of the Oregon Record Book Display and the 2016 Tour of Northwest Big Game Exhibit. The Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's 50-foot fish tank will again sports native salmon, steelhead, trout and sturgeon. Other attractions are a live trout pond, climbing wall and archery range. Also available will be hundreds of vendors covering fishing, hunting, rafting and other outdoor pursuits. Jody Smith and Dan Kloer headline a list of presentations and demonstrations. The speakers’ schedules can be found on www.exposureshows.com . Other giveaways include a travel trailer, a guided fishing trip out of Brookings and a Ruger SR40. Hours are noon to 9 p.m. today, 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday. Admission costs $7 for adults, or $5 with a Bi-Mart $2 off coupon good only today and Sunday. Kids younger than 12 get in for $1, and those 5 and younger are free. Seniors are admitted free from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. today. The Great Bear Show is scheduled for every two hours, beginning at 1 p.m. today, 10:30 a.m. Saturday and 11 a.m. Sunday. First Rogue springer of the year caught Spring sprang a bit early on the lower Rogue River Wednesday with the coming of the first spring chinook salmon of the season. An Indianapolis man fishing with Gold Beach guide Jay Lander caught the first spring chinook while fishing with plug lures for winter steelhead. The wild fish weighed about 18 pounds and was released, because all wild chinook must be released on the lower Rogue now. But Lander did snap an image of the chrome-bright salmon, and it was immediately shared between many a cellphone up and down the Rogue. The first springer of the season typically is caught in the lower Rogue in mid-February after a freshet. The first upper Rogue springer often comes to a steelheader in late April. Healthy History Hike set for March 6 Historian Larry Smith will lead his latest version of the "Healthy History Hikes" March 6 along several of Jacksonville's mining trails near the Britt Gardens. The easy, three-mile hike will traverse gravel and mulch paths to discover the engineering marvels of Rich Gulch and how miners from around the world developed methods to salvage gold from mine tailings. "Part of it is just the idea of getting people out and moving around in the middle of winter," Smith says. "The second is to learn something about how people from all over the world came to make Jacksonville the town that it was." This is the second in the Healthy History Hikes series, which is co-sponsored by the Southern Oregon Historical Society and the Ashland YMCA. The next will occur in April The hike is set to run from 9 a.m. to noon, and space is limited. To register, see www.sohs.org/hikes-list . The cost is $10; $5 for SOHA or Ashland YMCA members.
