Benninger, a 1979 Crater graduate, was an all-conference and all-state running back in football, an all-conference performer in basketball and a member of the Comets' baseball and track teams. He got a scholarship to play football at Chico State and was having a distinguished career with the Wildcats when a severe knee injury ended his career. Benninger then went to medical school in England and received a masters degree in sports medicine. As part of his masters work, he designed and built a shoulder assessment machine. While in England, Benninger also served as a rugby team doctor, a Formula — and world super bikes medical officer, a British Olympic Association doctor and a British Boxing Team doctor. He has also served as a lecturer in sports medicine. Benninger returned to the United States in 2000 and is now a professor at the Oregon Health Science University in Portland. He lives in Lake Oswego with his wife, Alison. Frantz, meanwhile, was a volleyball, basketball and track standout for the Comets. She won a state javelin championship for Crater during her senior year in 1990. Frantz attended Willamette University and won an NAIA national javelin championship in 1992. She still holds the school record in the event. Frantz also played volleyball for Willamette and set a single-season school record for blocks. She was named the school's female athlete of the year in 1994. Frantz now resides in Honolulu, where she has been a campaign manager for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Buckley, Martinez win titles at state youth swim meet Jamie Buckley claimed three state championships and Anya Martinez one to lead Superior Aquatics last weekend at the 11-14-year-old Oregon State Swimming Championships in Corvallis. Buckley won the girls 50-, 100- and 500-yard freestyles and was second in the 200 free and third in the 100 backstroke. Martinez captured the 200 free in the same division and placed second in the 500 free. She also was fourth in the 100 free, fifth in the 100 and 200 individual medleys and seventh in the 100 breaststroke. Their efforts helped Superior finished 12th out of 43 teams. Also for Superior, Annabel Purtzer placed eighth in the 100 back. Among 14-year-old girls, Kayla Haugen was seventh in the 100 free. For the boys, Dairian Wallis was fourth in the 50 free and sixth in the 500 free. In the 13s, Krystle Haugen placed second in the girls 1,650 free and fifth in the 100 free. In the 12s, James Gilmore placed third in the boys 50 breast, fourth in the 100 breast and fifth in the 200 IM, 50 butterfly, 100 fly and 200 free. Tolga Tokman, 14, placed third in the boys 200 free, fourth in the 100 back and 400 IM, fifth in the 200 fly and eighth in the 100 free. In the relays, the girls 13-14 team placed sixth in the 200 free with a time of 1:47.44. The team was comprised of Melissa Gilmore, Kayla Haugen, Krystle Haugen and Wallis. Snowboarders qualify for the state championships Six area boy snowboarders qualified for next weekend's prep state championships held at Mount Hood. In the boarder-cross event, North Medford's Ryan Scott, South Medford's Brian Klenke and David Lane, St. Mary's Seth Hill and Grants Pass' Kyle Getty qualified each qualified for the March 7-8 championships. Scott, Lane, Hill and Getty (alternate) will also compete in the slope-style event. In the team competition, with the top six ranked snowboarders from each squad, North Medford will be represented by Scott, James Gerritz, Jason Hanlin, Andrew Higgins, Justin Kelly and Andrew Quiel. South Medford team competitors include Lane, Klenke, Kent Eastman, David Glimpse, Cody Morrison, Justin Smith and alternate A.J. Zanitsch. The Ashland boys and girls squads each won team titles and also qualify for state.
