This truth is germane to the history book flap. Currently, liberals (their term not mine) control the field of battle called education, especially in our local schools. History is what they say it is. Opinion trumps fact, which might be ok if it was labeled as opinion rather than fact in the body of the text, not some vague reference to other beliefs pigeon-holed in the back of the book. Joel Marks is right. The founders were neither liberal nor conservative. They were patriots trying to establish a new form of government. Any history book that describes them differently is the author’s opinion, not history. I was amused by Mr. Woodard’s attempt to hide behind the so-called democratic process. It is about as democratic as the elections in North Korea. With liberal educators in control of the battlefield, could a different outcome be expected? No! The school board vote is a victory for revisionist with a liberal slant. It is not a victory for U.S. history or our students. They are constantly and tirelessly working to better our lives. The ultimate proof — Democratic State Sen. Chris Edwards of Eugene is proposing a bill that will regulate noisy bathroom air hand dryers. Yes, public bathroom hand dryers. That is at the top of everyone’s most important problem list, and he is right there fighting for you. It seems that, according to Senator Edwards, the air dryers should operate at a noise level no higher than 84 decibels. He must have gotten thousands of complaints about the noise. Otherwise he wouldn’t be wasting our money and time on such a stupendously frivolous venture. Forget about poverty, unemployment, terrorists, budgets, etc. We need to worry about public bathroom air dryer noise levels. If you think this is a joke, it's not, and we are being made a laughingstock, as it was reported in USA Today, among other places, April 16. P. Moran Medford A power play Last Friday night in Ashland, the cast at Thanks For the Memories Theatre Company were preparing for the opening night of their show “Company,” in the brand-new building owner and director Peter Wickliffe had just purchased. Excitement was high, only to be crushed by a fire marshal arriving with the news that they had to leave the premises because they had exceeded the maximum capacity of … 12? No one in their right mind would buy a theater that had a maximum capacity of 12 people, especially when they had been told the maximum capacity was 49. The disturbing part is how the fire official handled the situation. He was rude, unfeeling, and arrived without a legitimate justification for his claim, ordering they cancel the show. This was a power play, and what did it accomplish? It killed a small theater, with no funds to support itself, and it made someone’s dream just that much harder to reach. This theater company was already facing challenges, but now they are on the very verge of giving up when facing roadblock after roadblock. I hope Ashland is happy with what their taxes are paying for. Lauren Green Medford Make a racket The decision about whether or not the liquefied natural gas pipeline is built is in the balance. No permits for this project have been issued. There is still the opportunity to save our Southern Oregon counties from major environmental damage: the LNG plant disfiguring Coos Bay, the 232-mile pipeline scarring forests and private property, crossing 400 rivers and streams and disrupting fish and wild life habitat. Join the “Stop LNG” movement at 1 p.m. Sunday, May 3, in Bear Creek Park, Medford. Bring a sign, but most of all bring yourself and lots of friends. It’s vital to keep the pressure on our elected officials. Let’s make a loud and serious noise. See you there.
