Golden to be inducted into Women Bowling Association Hall of Fame By TIM PYLE Lee Golden has been wearing out Rogue Valley bowling lanes for more than 35 years. The 73-year-old Central Point resident and lifelong Rogue Valley native was turned on to the sport by friends visiting from Washington in the mid-1960s. In the time since, Golden has been such a fixture on the local bowling scene that she will be inducted into the Medford Women Bowling Association Hall of Fame on March 2 at the Red Lion. Today, Golden is rolling the first ball at 9:45 a.m. to open the Medford Women's Bowling Association City Tournament at Roxy Ann Lanes. "Never in my life did I think I would get to do something like this," Golden says. "It's really quite an honor for me." Golden's bowling accomplishments run the gamut from a state title in doubles competition in 1980 to city championships to participation in numerous national events. She says her career-high game was a 276 outing at Medford Lanes in the Monday Night League about 20 years ago. Although she no longer bowls seven to eight times a week as she did in her heyday, Golden still hits the lanes once a week, often with her daughter, Scharie Bostrom. Family has always been at the root of Golden's bowling, and she believes the sport has remained family-friendly into the 21st century. "It's a family thing we do," says Golden, who instilled her love of the sport into five of her six children. "And I think bowling on the whole has kept within a realm that people with big families can afford it yet." The social aspect of bowling was another of the factors that hooked Golden. "It just seemed like you meet a lot of nice people," Golden says. "Anywhere you go, you can almost always tell who a bowler is because they have a big smile on their face." Bowling has generated plenty of smiles for Golden, and more are bound still to come. "Bowling is a game that can teach you a lot of things," she says. "You have to just go down there and try it out. Roll the ball and see what happens."
