I’ve heard people say “The Empire Strikes Back,” but I don’t think that’s right. Could you look into it? — Anne J., Medford We put our crack team of Since You Asked sleuths onto this question, Anne, and we dug deep into the past. Looking over the Mail Tribune archives, the last movie at the Holly was Wes Craven’s horror film “Deadly Friend.” The theater closed on Oct. 27, 1986, the owners citing lack of attendance as one of many reasons. We know you’re curious, Anne, so you’re probably wondering what the first movie that played at the Holly when it opened in 1930. Theater operator Walter H. Leverette, a Medford business and civic leader who also owned and operated the State Theater at Eighth Street and Central Avenue, booked a musical comedy called "Hold Everything," starring Joe E. Brown, for the opening. A local revue, dubbed "Holly's Follies," planned as an opening act was hugely popular and sold out two shows. "Hold Everything" was one of the first musical comedies released that used an early two-color Technicolor process. One of the popular numbers from the movie about a boxer was “You Are the Cream in My Coffee.” As you’re likely aware, Anne, the Holly is on tap for a full restoration next year with about half of the $4.3 million raised to complete the repair work.
