The theft occurred shortly after 2 a.m. Sunday when a man wearing shorts, a T-shirt and sneakers spent about two and a half minutes prying his way into the soda machine, then ripping out the change canister inside and driving off in a white car. The whole thing was caught on video, and the Illinois Valley Fire District released the footage on Monday morning, along with a musical soundtrack added by the department's information-technology specialist, according to Chief Dennis Hoke. The song is a twangy Jimmy Buffett tune with the chorus, "You're an A------ Tonight." The third word is unfit to print, but it rhymes with "glass-bowl." The video was an immediate hit. As of Monday night, it had gotten more than 2,400 views on YouTube. Just as immediate were the tips that began coming in on the thief's identity. "We know who did it, we already got that information," Hoke said. Unfortunately, the suspected perpetrator has left town; Hoke said he's rumored to have gone back to California, where he lives. Hoke filed a report with the Josephine County Sheriff's Office but said he doesn't expect it to be a high priority, given the sheriff's bare-bones staffing level. He said that while the vending machine vandalism isn't that big of a deal in itself — the thief made off with an estimated $50 in change — he worries about people getting too used to crimes like break-ins. "My fear is just the whole 'broken windows' concept, that this is going to be the new norm for our community, and we can't do that," he said. Sheriff Dave Daniel said he's asked his Cave Junction deputy to look into the incident. As for the video, Hoke said he's gotten only one complaint about the salty language in the song.
