MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jul. 3, 2014 @ 12:05 am Updated Jul 3, 2014 at 3:05 AM Posted Jul. 3, 2014 @ 12:05 am Updated Jul 3, 2014 at 3:05 AM »  Social News Medford will host the 14 and under B softball state tournament beginning Friday at U.S. Cellular Community Park and North Medford High School. Girls teams from North Medford, Crater, Eagle Point and Phoenix will be among the 33 teams competing in the three-day state tournament. Games are scheduled to begin at 10 a.m. Friday and the tourney will run through 4 p.m. Sunday. The majority of games will be played at U.S. Cellular, with a handful at North Medford. The Comets of Central Point finished second to Grants Pass last weekend in the 10 and under softball state tournament in Albany. The Comets posted a 4-2 record in the tournament, with both losses coming against Grants Pass. Leading hitters during the tournament for the Comets were catcher Zoie Fisher (.750 batting average), second baseman Kailee Davis (.688) and shortstop Ellie Laws (.467), while Caitlyn Warner and Dezi Hatfield shared pitching duties as well as at first base. Warner pitched 31/2 games with 26 strikeouts and 10 walks and Hatfield pitched 21/2 games with 22 strikeouts and five walks. Grants Pass tied the championship game at 11-all with two runs in the final inning. With the game extending beyond the time limit, it went into international tiebreaker rules and Grants Pass ultimately prevailed 14-12. Other team members included third baseman Kasydi Bennett and outfielders Sophie Vanway, Maddie Kocina, Ashli Bennett, Maddie Sheadel and Lilly Mickson. Debra Allen of Ashland earned three top-seven placements at the U.S. Fencing Association National Tournament this past weekend. Representing the Southern Oregon Fencing Club, which trains out of the Madrone Trail Charter School gym in Medford, Allen placed third in Veteran Women's foil, sixth in Veteran Women's epee and seventh in Veteran Women's saber. Allen's third-place showing in foil places her on the U.S. International team that will compete in the Pan American Games in Aruba in August. It also qualifies Allen, who recently returned to competitive fencing after a 30-year hiatus, as a first-alternate to represent the U.S. in the World Championships in October.
