Costco eyes 10 acres at Northgate Team from retailer has not submitted any plans with city Although it's not yet going public with its plans, warehouse retailer Costco is apparently getting serious about opening a store in the Northgate Centre Marketplace, between the center's current businesses and East McAndrews Road. Medford Planning Director Jim Huber said there have been two meetings laying the groundwork for the project. Although no plans have been submitted, surveyors have been scoping out a 10-acre parcel south of REI. Huber said a team of Costco people attended the first meeting at City Hall last fall, and a smaller group visited earlier this year to go over engineering and other matters. "We're still working out some issues," Huber said. "When we met the first time, a lot of it had to do with transportation questions. When we met again it was more about design issues. We process applications, so we won't know much more until something is submitted." In addition to REI, the Northgate Centre includes Trader Joe's, Petco, Ulta cosmetics, La Strada Boutique and several restaurant outlets. There was no word on whether a new Costco would augment or replace the company's existing store on Crater Lake Highway, located more than a mile to the northeast. A spokesperson for Costco's real estate office in Issaquah, Wash., said the company does not comment on projects before construction. Costco produced sales of $105.2 billion during fiscal 2013, ending last Sept. 1. It operates more than 250 stores worldwide. Costco built its present store on 12.5 acres along Crater Lake Highway in 1991. Within a year or two it expanded to its present 136,000-square-foot dimensions. The northern wall was pushed out, and the food court area was moved to make way for a tire center. Craig Ramey, senior vice president and senior marketing officer for Regency Centers' Portland office, did not immediately return phone messages. Regency Centers operates the Northgate Centre.
