That hit, however, propelled the Eagles to a 3-0 victory and a split of the twin bill. South Medford bounced back for a 1-0 triumph in 13 innings in Game 2. Mendenhall had a perfect game through five innings of Game 1, only to run into trouble in the sixth. With the bases full, Kelsey Heider sent a sinking liner to right field that dropped in for a single. The ball skipped under the glove of the Panther fielder for an error that cleared the bases and broke the scoreless tie. It was the second conference win over a state-playoff hopeful team for Eagle Point (10-2, 2-2 SOC), dispelling the notion that Saturday’s Game 1 victory was an upset. Advertisement "Every game they go out to win, not to just see what happens," said Eagles coach Jackie Auchard, whose team split with perennial SOC heavyweight North Medford last week. "Every time they play they want to step it up to another level." Mendenhall matched Heider, who gave up four hits, in strikeouts with seven. "I thought (both pitchers) were great out there," said Auchard. "Kelsey can go forever. She basically pitched three games today." In Game 2, South Medford (8-3, 3-1) pounded out 11 hits to Eagle Point’s seven. But the Panthers didn’t break through until the top of the 13th. Jackie Chaplin started the rally with a single, stole second and then raced home on Simone Hubbard’s RBI hit. Eagle Point put a runner on third base in the bottom half of the frame but couldn’t bring home the tying run. Panther starter Jill Jeter fanned nine in six innings of work. Mendenhall struck out seven in relief and recorded her fifth win against two losses. Hubbard went 3-for-6 to lead South, while Alex Jordahl, Chaplin and Marissa Towry each added a pair of hits. Shannon Richardson was 2-for-5 to pace the Eagle Point attack. GRANTS PASS 2-0, NORTH MEDFORD 1-3 — Kandice Hallett and Kendra Strahm combined for a three-hit shutout in the nightcap to help North Medford salvage a doubleheader split at Fagone Field. Strahm, who took over for Hallett in the third inning of Game 2, had nine strikeouts to close the door on Grants Pass (9-2, 3-1 SOC). Strahm also had eight strikeouts in the opener and held the Cavers hitless until the fifth inning, when GP used a two-run single by Jess Bransfield to eke out the win. Deni Rowley had two hits to pace the Black Tornado (6-4, 2-2) in Game 1 before a collision at second base in the fifth forced the standout to leave the game early. She was taken to the hospital for X-rays on her foot but they were negative and showed only a sprain. Katie Gould singled in the fifth, moved to third on a double by Steph Haskett and scored moments later on a passed ball for the Tornado’s lone run as it stranded nine runners in Game 1 and 16 in the twin bill. Haskett and Mallorie Hoover each went 2-for-3 with an RBI in Game 2, with Jessica Sandoval and Emily Morrill also adding two hits for North. Becca Shelamer went 2-for-4 with a triple and Kristin Davidson was 3-for-4 with a double in the opener for the Comets (10-3, 2-2 SOC). In the second game, sophomore Ashleigh Cuddie had seven strikeouts and one walk and Cristofaro went 2-for-3 as Crater completed the sweep. Shelamer and Angela Bettenburg each added a double for Crater, while Kate Gibbs went 2-for-3 and Sammi Gilbert 2-for-2 for Ashland (6-8, 0-4). The Challengers scored all four of their runs in Game 1 during a first-inning barrage that included five of the Crusaders’ six errors and one of Cascade’s two hits. St. Mary’s sophomore Claire Crawley and freshman Caitlan Carini each were 2-for-3 with two runs, with Karen Flynn also going 2-for-3 for the Crusaders (5-3, 1-3 Dist. 6). Debbie Gettman had a double in Game 2 for Cascade Christian.
