Once that need is filled, donations may be distributed to others in need. Visiting the coast is a pilgrimage that most Oregonians make every year. Although taking this trip is the dying wish of a Medford woman, it’s financially too far afield. Diagnosed with terminal cancer, this 60-year-old woman wants to create some new memories in beautiful surroundings to comfort her 35-year-old son when she is gone. Disabilities have made life harder for both mother and son, who relied heavily on the woman’s own mother to help them with day-to-day tasks, such as shopping and running errands. Much of their love, support and encouragement went out of this family’s life when the older woman died two years ago. The 60-year-old woman had long borne responsibility as head of her household since being divorced.   But the mother didn’t give up on the care of her son, who lives in a Living Opportunities group home for developmentally disabled clients. The nonprofit organization operates under the mission of giving people with developmental disabilities a place in the larger community, working for the same employers, living in the same neighborhoods and experiencing life in the way everyone else aspires. Unlike many Living Opportunities clients, the cancer-ridden woman has virtually no hopes for a better future. But she is determined to enjoy the time she has left by remaining in her own home and pursuing poignant reminders that life, while difficult, really is worth living. The prospect of seeing the Pacific Ocean with her family and friends would enliven the woman’s final days.
