COLLEGE BASKETBALL OSU Ownership Beavers stifle Washington State on road Comment By Corvallis Gazette-Times MailTribune.com By Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Jan. 18, 2015 @ 12:01 am By Corvallis Gazette-Times Posted Jan. 18, 2015 @ 12:01 am » Social News PULLMAN, Wash. — Langston Morris-Walker recorded career highs of 22 points and 11 rebounds to help lead the Oregon State men’s basketball team to a 62-47 Pac-12 victory over Washington State on Saturday night. Gary Payton II added 13 points and 13 rebounds for Oregon State (12-5, 3-2). The Beavers rebounded from a tough 56-43 loss at Washington on Thursday night. “It shows that we have toughness and character,” coach Wayne Tinkle said. “To bounce back after a subpar performance the other night, and we’ve been struggling on the road, so for these guys to come out and really stick to the plan and give it everything they had shows what we have. “A lot of people thought there wasn’t going to be a lot coming this year, but these guys have been going at it day in and day out. They are believing. We still have a long ways to go, but I couldn’t be more proud of the heart that they’ve shown.” DaVonte Lacy, playing on a sore right knee that limited him to 10 minutes in the first half, scored all of his team-high 16 points in the second half for Washington State (9-8, 3-2). Josh Hawkinson had 11 points and nine rebounds for the Cougars. The Beavers led 25-16 at the half after holding WSU to 25 percent shooting from the field. In the first half of their 108-99 overtime win over Oregon on Thursday, the Cougars scored 57 points and shot 72.4 percent. Washington State wound up shooting 29.2 percent against Oregon State. The Beavers shot 48.8 percent, outrebounded the Cougars 37-22 and had a 24-12 advantage in points in the paint. “We defend. When you look at our defensive numbers it doesn’t surprise anybody,” Tinke said. “Now, to their defense, they were maybe a little fatigued from an overtime game. But I’m not discrediting our guys’ effort and focus. There’s a reason that we do this mostly day in and day out. After 16, or how many ever games we’ve played, the numbers are still there. So it’s their focus. It’s their intensity.” The Cougars drew a season-high crowd of 5,116, but the Beavers silenced WSU fans by scoring the first six points of the first half and the first eight points of the second half. The Cougars trailed from the opening basket. Morris-Walker scored 19 points in the second half to help the Beavers maintain control of the game. “Coach is trying to get me to be a smarter player out there,” Morris-Walker said. “I had 22 points but I only took seven shots so that’s what I’m really excited about. “I just made some big shots. Our coaching staff is phenomenal and they are always telling me to keep shooting. They weren’t going in at the beginning of the season, but now I’m starting to get a rhythm and starting to have some confidence.” The Cougars pulled within seven at 46-39 with 4:57 left, but Morris-Walker quickly responded with his third 3-pointer, tying his career high for 3s in a game. Payton, a 6-foot-3 guard, leads the Beavers with 11.8 points, 8.5 rebounds and 2.9 steals per game. The junior college transfer ranked second in NCAA Division I through Friday with 2.8 steals. The Beavers, already short on depth and scholarship players, played their second game without sixth man Victor Robbins. He’s serving a 10-game suspension for a violation of athletic department policy. Robbins is Oregon State’s third-leading scorer at 10.3. The Beavers have won four consecutive games against Washington State for the first time since a four-game run from 1999-2001.
