The National Weather Service said winds are expected to barrel into the area Wednesday or Thursday, bringing winds of 15 to 25 mph to Medford and up to 30 mph in Ashland. "We haven't finalized on the speed yet, but right now I wouldn't be surprised to see 30 to 40 mph possible over the pass," said meteorologist Frederic Bunnag. Showers are in the forecast, but Bunnag said he didn't expect much rain to show because of downsloping, a phenomena that occurs when winds travel downhill, compress, warm and dry out. People traveling over the Siskiyou Pass, especially drivers in high-profile vehicles, are urged to use caution because of the potential for sudden gusts. The winds are expected to diminish Thursday night, and snow levels are forecast to drop to about 3,500 feet Friday. It's the best shot for new snow on Mount Ashland, but Bunnag said he isn't counting on any more than two or three inches. The next chance for snow will come Monday, then again mid-week. On Monday, freezing rain turned parts of Interstate 5 into an ice-skating rink in Douglas County. Oregon State Police reported multiple crashes near milepost 108, close to Myrtle Creek. No injuries were reported. One crash involved a jack-knifed semi at milepost 129, about four miles north of Roseburg, that blocked both southbound lanes. An OSP patrol vehicle was struck multiple times, the agency said.
