Mustangs suffer first loss; Rogues romp By Mail Tribune staff Jun 14, 2022 09:46 AM A A FAIRFIELD, Calif. — One rough inning proved costly for the Medford Mustangs on Monday, with the Fairfield Expos using a six-run fifth inning to erase a 6-1 deficit for a 7-6 victory. The loss was the first of the summer for the American Legion AAA Mustangs (5-1), who advanced the tying run into scoring position in the sixth and seventh innings but could not convert. Tanner Douglas paced Medford at the plate by going 3-for-4 with two runs and two RBIs, while Aiden Horsley and Jace Miller each had two hits, one run and one RBI against Fairfield. On Sunday, Medford used a first-inning barrage against Napa Valley to claim the opening game of a doubleheader, 8-2, and then a steady stream of runs resulted in a 13-2 win in Game 2 for a sweep. The Mustangs got a three-run double from Horsley to spark a five-run surge in Game 1 and Beau Aldrich allowed six hits in a complete-game effort with five strikeouts and one walk. Triston Wallace and Cody Borraggine each posted two hits. In Game 2 against Napa Valley, Owen Thompson went 2-for-3 with one run and three RBIs, Horsley 2-for-3 with two runs and two RBIs and Miller also drove in two runs. MEDFORD ROGUES 13, DRIVELINE GRIZZLIES 0: Trey Nelson drove in five runs to power Medford’s offensive showcase while the pitching staff, led by starter Adam Shew, surrendered just three hits to win the first game of a two-game series against the Driveline Grizzlies at Harry & David Field. Nelson’s two-run triple gave the Rogues (4-4) a 7-0 lead during their six-run second inning. Nelson finished 3-for-4 and scored twice. Shew struck out seven and allowed just one hit and a walk across five innings. Alden Norquist struck out one after spelling Shew in the sixth and Braeden Munger fanned six over the final three innings — both pitchers allowed just a hit and a walk. Leadoff hitter Michael LaVigne finished 3-for-3 and scored three times for the Rogues, and Tyler Peterson went 2-for-4 with two runs and a couple of RBIs. The Rogues’ Carson Blatnick was 2-for-3 with a double, a run and an RBI while Grant Henry supplied two runs and a pair of RBIs without registering a hit.
