Mail Tribune / Andrew Mariman Blaze destroys Medford home; residents escape A curtain ignited by a light fixture sparked a fire that destroyed a house in west Medford Sunday afternoon. Four people in the home escaped without injury. The fire was reported at 2:36 p.m. at 1118 W. Eighth St., Medford. Four engines and a battalion chief were dispatched within five minutes and they arrived to find heavy fire in the rear of the house and dark smoke in the front. The fire spread rapidly because of lightweight wall coverings and ample access to oxygen, said Battalion Chief Dan Petersen. The fire was "knocked down" in 12 minutes and under control within 30 minutes, Petersen said. The house, which was valued at $100,000, was considered a total loss. It had no working smoke detector, Petersen added. While on scene, Medford Fire Department personnel were called to five additional emergency incidents, including four medical calls and a non-injury motor vehicle accident, Petersen said.
