WEATHER Freezing temperatures forecast to follow wet weekend Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 7, 2016 at 9:22 AM Posted Mar. 7, 2016 at 9:22 AM » Social News A chilly air mass is forecast to push into southwest Oregon early Tuesday, with temperatures as low as 29 degrees in the Rogue, Applegate and Illinois valleys. Because of that, the National Weather Service will issue a freeze watch from 1 to 7 a.m. Tuesday. The watch covers Jackson, Josephine and Curry counties, along with a wide swath in Northern California. This could be an issue for gardeners. "Although these temperatures are not unseasonable, the very unseasonably warm conditions over the past month have caused plants and trees to be much farther along in bloom than (they) would normally be for this time of year," the advisory said. But forecasters said most plants should be fine. Meteorologist Mike Stavish said temperatures need to drop down to about 28 degrees or less for several hours to fatally damage most plants, and while it's expected to get cold, forecasters don't see temperatures dipping quite that low. "A lot of the stuff that's at risk right now is pretty tolerant," Stavish said. The cold front comes on the heels of a wet weekend across the region. Precipitation totals recorded by the weather service over the past 72 hours varied in Southern Oregon from a half inch in Medford to more than two inches just outside Ashland. Wind speeds reached 12 mph in Medford, 24 mph in Ashland and close to 40 mph at Buckhorn Springs and Mount Stella, according to weather service data. Snowfall totals were not immediately available.
