Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jun. 28, 2015 at 12:01 AM Posted Jun. 28, 2015 at 12:01 AM » Social News June 28, 1915 CHIEF OF POLICE AND SERGEANT IN A WORDY CLASH Chief of Police Hittson and Sergeant Pat Mego, first and second heads of the Medford police department, engaged in a sensational squabble in front of the Commercial club Saturday afternoon, just before the men changed shifts. Chief Hittson added a dramatic touch to the fuss by pulling his gun and club. He defends this action by declaring that Sergeant Mego made a move towards his hip pocket, and that he though he was reaching for his gun. Sergeant Mego had no weapon and proved it when the squabble was over by lifting his coat tail. In the excitement Sergeant Mego was hit on the arm with a night club. The quarrel was the result of nine months bad feeling between the two officers. They have not been on the best of terms for months. Their grievances were fanned into flames by the passing of a bantering remark. Sheriff Singler, who was with the two when the storm broke, saw the entire incident but made no effort to restrain either. Excitement reigned for five minutes. Threats that would do credit to a pirate were hurled back and forth. The men separated. Though half a hundred people witnessed the rumpus, none advanced peace talk. Mayor Emerick said today that both the belligerents would be allowed to remain on duty, but that if there was a second outbreak of hostilities both would be discharged. The mayor said that the incident was "regrettable," but that both understood each other now, and that there would be no further argument. The council and the two police officials regard the incident as closed. HIGH PRAISE FOR SISKIYOU HIGHWAY FROM J.S. HOWARD J.S. Howard, "father of Medford," and pioneer road builder of southern Oregon, spent Sunday autoing through the Siskiyous. He went away in the morning a doubter as to the merits of the Pacific highway and returned one of its staunchest boosters. "Jackson county has every reason in to world to be proud of the Pacific highway over the Siskiyous. it is one of the best roads I have ever seen. It can't be beat in the west or any other place. The taxpayers of Jackson county have no cause to complain and should be proud of the road. It is simply great. It is worth what it cost."
