Bartels makes Miners pay in Pirate rout TALENT -- Andy Bartels received a little extra motivation after being hit by a pitch twice in the Pirates' 13-run first-inning against Yreka Thursday. Bartels responded by pounding a grand slam and a double in his two other official at-bats and drove in five runs as Phoenix ripped the Miners 21-0 in non-conference baseball at Hagler-James Park. "It doesn't take much for him to get ready at the plate," said Phoenix coach Joe Hagler, whose team improved to 2-0 on the season, "but that might have added to it." Hagler wasn't certain if Bartels' grand slam in the Pirates' five-run third was high enough to leave the park. "It was a line drive," said Hagler. "When it left the bat I thought it might be off the fence for a triple." In the first inning, the Pirates' first eight batters reached base. They sent 16 players to the plate in the inning. The Pirates' first four batters each scored twice in the frame. The Phoenix rally consisted of six hits, three walks, three hit batters and one error. Bobby Dawson's towering three-run homer highlighted the explosion. Phoenix ended the game with 12 hits off four Yreka pitchers. Phoenix received strong pitching from junior right-hander Dawson and senior Ben Williams. Dawson allowed three singles and struck out three in the first three innings, while Williams allowed one hit over the final two innings. "Dawson throws pretty hard, and his curveball is getting better," said Hagler. "He spotted the ball well today." Dawson added two hits, three RBIs and scored twice, while Theron Hull chipped in two hits and scored three times.
