Saturday, Jan. 17:  KS Wild staffer Jeanine Moy and botanical-area adopters will lead a hike to the Rough and Ready Botanical Area in the Illinois Valley. The area is home to some of the most diverse plant life in the region. Time permitting, the group will stop at French Flat, another botanical area at risk for misuse. The group will carpool from Northwest Nature Shop, 154 Oak St., Ashland. Dress in layers and sturdy shoes, and bring water and lunch. For more information, see www.rouguevalleyaudubon.org Wednesday, Dec. 3:  On the first Wednesday of every month, RVAS conducts a bird walk at Agate Lake, about two miles east of the Highway 62/140 intersection. Birders should meet at the parking lot on the far side of the lake across from the boat dock. The walk begins at 8:30 a.m. and will end before noon. This is an ongoing citizen-science project to record the numbers of different species observed by walk participants. You don’t need to be an experienced birder to join in, but taking part will help you become one. Coordinator and leader of the walk is Murray Orr (541-857-9050, [email protected]). Contact him if you are willing to help. Christmas Bird Counts Saturday, Dec. 20:  The Rogue Valley Audubon Society will coordinate the Medford Christmas Bird Count. Every Saturday:  Siskiyou VeloMelo rides begin at various morning hours from different locations. 20 to 25 miles. Rides are easy pace (10-13 mph) and terrain with frequent stops to regroup. The rides are for experienced group riders who wish to ride in periodic pace lines at a moderate-plus average pace (16 to 18 mph); more than 50 miles, on mostly hilly terrain.
