A recommended method is by burning. Is there a local organization that provides this service? — Daniel B., Medford. We wouldn’t recommend burning anything with the kind of hot weather we’ve been having lately, Daniel. You’re right. The flag should be disposed of properly. According to customary rules of disposal, you should fold the flag, then place it on a fire of sufficient size to properly burn it. Once placed on the fire, the individual should come to attention, salute the flag and then recite the Pledge of Allegiance, followed by a moment of silence. If all that sounds like too much to deal with, Daniel, there is an organization that will take care of worn-out flags. The Veterans of Foreign Wars, Medford Post 1833, has a full-sized mailbox at 241 E. Barnett Road, Suite, B, behind the Winco shopping center that will take flags. Commander Don Thomson said the flags are given to local Boy Scouts, who light a bonfire, then burn the flags while following the appropriate patriotic protocol. Thomson said the VFW receives dozens of flags every year for disposal from local residents. “To give you some idea, we have emptied the box out three times in front of our building,” he said.
