The entire Black Tornado squad — 23 girls and two boys — was picked from its performance at the National Cheerleading Association summer camp at Corvallis in July. Selection is made on leadership qualities, jumping and tumbling ability, stunting and cheerleading. Both North’s varsity and JV squads received All-American recognition at the camp. They will be among 3,000 cheerleaders nominated to perform at halftime of college football’s national championship game Jan. 4. The team needs to raise $50,000 by Nov. 1 for the trip to Miami. North Medford coach Hayley Outlaw says the selection was significant since the team is in a rebuilding mode with 18 new members this year. "It’s a great honor for the whole program to be nominated," said Outlaw. "It really proves that we’re an up-and-coming program."
