Thursday Mar 30, 2017 at 6:38 PM Mar 30, 2017 at 7:06 PM Nick Morgan Mail Tribune @mtcrimebeat A Medford couple have been arrested following a police investigation prompted by a man who came into a local hospital last weekend with a gunshot wound.  A Jackson County grand jury indicted John Robert Hermann, 32, and his girlfriend, Stephanie Allison Van Cleave, 45, both of the 400 block of West Main Street, on felony charges for their alleged roles in a shooting early Saturday morning, reportedly over money, according to a Medford police release. Hermann faces attempted murder and assault charges alleging he shot 25-year-old Matthew Stephen Atkinson early Saturday morning, according to Jackson County Circuit Court records. Hermann also faces felony charges of manufacturing and possessing a destructive device after investigators found a homemade bomb at the home, the release says.  Van Cleave faces a felony charge of conspiring to commit first-degree assault and a misdemeanor charge of tampering with evidence in the shooting. At 3:06 a.m. Saturday, Atkinson showed up at Asante Rogue Regional Medical Center with a single gunshot wound that traveled through his torso, according to police. The wound wasn't life-threatening, and a person police didn't name drove Atkinson to the hospital. He has since been released from the hospital, according to a Facebook post. Calls to Medford police weren't immediately returned. In the days and hours before the shooting, Van Cleave and Hermann had appeared at Atkinson's home in the 200 block of Chestnut Avenue and made threats, according to police. About half an hour prior to the shooting Saturday, Van Cleave arrived at Atkinson's home again, this time in a van with Hermann and another suspect not immediately known, according to the release. Van Cleave allegedly tried to compel Atkinson to exit his home. About 20 minutes later, Atkinson came out of his home, and Hermann allegedly fired a single shot before the suspects scattered, the release says. On Tuesday, the pair were arrested following a short standoff at their apartment at the Medford hotel building at 406 W. Main St. Police evacuated the building's floor, and called the pair out after 30 minutes of negotiations. After serving a search warrant, detectives found the gun believed to be used in the crime and the Oregon State Police Bomb Squad took possession of the homemade explosive. Hermann and Van Cleave remained in the Jackson County Jail Thursday evening, jail records show.
