Frohnmayer, 74, died in his sleep at his home Monday night. He was at the helm at the university for 15 years before his retirement in 2009. He served in the Oregon Legislature in the 1970s and was the state attorney general through the 1980s. In his last years as UO president, Frohnmayer cleared the way for construction of the 12,500-seat arena. News of his death brought tributes from elected officials, ranging from Eugene Mayor Kitty Piercy to Oregon’s two U.S. senators, Ron Wyden and Jeff Merkley; business people; students and former students; UO trustees; and local residents who met him only briefly but said they remembered him with affection and respect. Gov. Kate Brown ordered flags across the state be flown at half-staff in Frohnmayer’s honor on the date of the memorial gathering. “His deep love of Oregon is reflected in a lifetime of leadership and public service,” Brown said. The celebration of life will begin at 2 p.m. — with doors opening an hour earlier — and a reception will follow, according to Marla Rae, a family friend. Frohnmayer is survived by his wife, Lynn; sons Mark and Jonathan; and daughter Amy. The Frohnmayers lost two daughters to a rare inherited disease called Fanconi anemia. The couple led the fight to vanquish the disease.
