By DON HUNT Sarah Eyman continued her giant-killing ways at Newland Track on Tuesday. The South Medford High senior upset Ashland standout Paris Edwards in the 800-meter run during a dual meet between the Panthers and Grizzlies. Using the same killer kick that catapulted her to victory in the 1,500 meters at the Crater Rotary Classic three days earlier, Eyman reached the finish line in 2 minutes, 21 seconds, the fifth-best 800 time in the state this season. Edwards, the defending district champion in the 800 and 1,500 and the girls state champion in cross country last fall, was clocked in 2:23.0. The South Medford girls won 12 of 17 events to rack up a 90-54 victory. Ashland won the boys meet, 76-68. "I was really scared at the starting line," Eyman said. "It's intimidating knowing you're going against a state champion. "But once the race started and we were running stride-for-stride, I thought, hey, maybe I can win this." Edwards took the lead after 200 meters and held it to the last 100, when Eyman turned on her rocket booster to win going away. "This is a big confidence-booster for me," said Eyman, who ran a lifetime best in the event by a whopping five seconds. "We've been doing a lot of speed work in practice, and I could feel how much it helped me in this race." Ashland coach Bob Julian said Edwards looked like a tired runner. She had spent most of last week at a United Nations mock workshop in Eugene, he said, and was scrambling this week to catch up on her other schoolwork. "I don't want to take anything away from Sarah Eyman because she ran a great race, but Paris just didn't have her normal zip today," Julian said. "When Eyman kicked, Paris didn't respond." Edwards, who owns the state's best time in the 3,000 at 10:09.8, will run the 800 and 1,500 at the Westview Invitational in Beaverton this weekend, then run the 3,000 at the Centennial meet the following week. Julian is confident his star runner will bounce back. "She always does," Julian said. "She learns from her mistakes, and anytime she's been beaten in the past, she comes back with a vengeance. I'm not worried about her at all." Heather Frigaard had a big day for the South girls, winning the 100 (13.1), 200 (27.4), 100 hurdles (15.8) and high jump (4-10). The Ashland boys were paced by Jesse Jones, who won the 100 (11.3) and triple jump (40-5), finished second in the 200 to South Medford freshman Andres Reed (23.5) and ran a leg on the Grizzlies' triumphant 4 x 100 relay. Ashland sophomore javelin specialist Cameron Voget launched a personal-record throw of 177-5 in his season debut, the best mark in the Southern Oregon Conference. "He's got the potential to be one of the best throwers in the state," Ashland assistant coach Jim Hageman said. "He's got long levers (arms), a good build and he takes it seriously." Voget attended a clinic put on by former javelin world-record holder Tom Petranoff last month in Portland, and almost immediately began throwing the spear 15 feet further. "He critiqued my technique and made some changes," Voget said. "I've got my throwing arm up higher now, and the higher release point is giving me more velocity on my throws." Voget's best last year was 161 feet; he's shooting for 190 by the end of this season. "I'd really like to hit 200, but I'm not sure that's realistic this year," he said. South Medford's Heather Fossen also reached a lifetime best in the javelin, winning the girls' competition with a heave of 120-2. Her previous best was 117-7. "I speeded up my approach," Fossen said, "and I think that was the difference." Other notable marks were registered by South's Cameron Gallop, who won the discus with a lifetime best of 144-1; the Panthers' Perry Custance, who won the 400 in 52-flat and the 800 in 2:00.9; Ashland's Ben Bryan, who took the 110 hurdles in 15.8 and 300 hurdles in 42.4; and the Grizzlies' Anita Sindelar, who won the 1,500 in 5:08.0 and the 3,000 in 11:14.9.
