Oregon Road Conditions & Cams Email Story to a Friend April 21, 2006 A bank robbery took place Thursday at the Sterling Savings Bank on Stewart Avenue in Medford. The branch may remain closed today. Mail Tribune / Roy Musitelli Robbery suspect escapes Suspect flees on foot after robbing Medford bank Medford police began a hunt Thursday afternoon for a man who robbed the Sterling Savings Bank at 620 Stewart Ave. According to Lt. Mike Moran, the man approached a teller at 1:07 p.m. and produced a note saying he was armed. No patrons were at the bank when the man, described as a white adult, approximately 5 feet, 8 inches tall and 165 pounds, then fled on foot heading east across the parking lot closest to Stewart Avenue. Witnesses said he appeared to be between 40 and 50 years old and was wearing a white ball cap. "He was moving rather slowly after the event, which suggests he may be infirm in some way," Moran said. Advertisement Police established a large perimeter encompassing several blocks, but could not trap the suspect. Heavy foot and vehicle traffic in the area kept a police dog from finding a scent trail. Detectives worked with two Federal Bureau of Investigation agents inside the bank following the robbery. They looked at surveillance video in hopes of gathering useful images of the suspect. There was no word if the bank would reopen for business today. "Usually when there’s a robbery a bank won’t reopen," Moran said. Anyone with information regarding the case is asked to call police at 774-2238.
