Pedestrian sting set for today in east Medford Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Mar. 15, 2016 at 9:24 AM Posted Mar. 15, 2016 at 9:24 AM » Social News The Medford Police Department will conduct a “targeted pedestrian safety enforcement operation” — a pedestrian sting — at East Main Street and North Keene Way Drive from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. today. The three-hour operation will focus on drivers failing to yield the right of way to pedestrians in the crosswalk. A pedestrian working with the police will use the crosswalk at that intersection. Drivers who do not stop will be pulled over and cited for failure to stop and remain stopped for a pedestrian in a marked or unmarked crosswalk and passing a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk. Both violations carry a potential fine of $260. Drivers should be reminded there is a crosswalk at every intersection, regardless of whether it is marked or unmarked. Oregon law requires drivers to stop and remain stopped if a pedestrian is walking in their lane of traffic or the adjacent lane. The rule applies on single or multi-lane roadways. Oregon law also prohibits passing a stopped vehicle at a marked or unmarked crosswalk at an intersection if the vehicle is stopped to permit a pedestrian to cross the roadway.
