Riley’s low, hard shot went into the left corner of the goal from about 18 yards out after a throw-in and some battling for the ball. Haylie Durant assisted on the goal. “That was a by-product of us putting pressure on them,” South Medford head coach Chris Hollewijn said. The defensive efforts of Larissa Lakin, Desiree Lakin, Anna Rose, Sara Smith and Andrea DeVries helped seal the victory for the Panthers (7-1, 5-0 SWC), who have won seven straight with six shutouts. “Rivalry games are always a challenge,” Hollewijn said. “There is a lot on the line and a lot of pride on the line.” Raney Brooks and Hannah Kapple performed well in the midfield and forwards Brittney Jensen and Renae Nisbet helped keep pressure on North (4-2-3, 2-2-1), Hollewijn said. Goalkeeper McKenzie Kapp earned the shutout. “It was a great team effort,” Hollewijn said. “I’m really proud of the girls. They rose to the occasion and showed a ton of spirit. We are happy with the result.” North freshmen Madison Morgan and Rylee Karrick did a good job helping fill in for injured starters Sydney Thomas and McKenna Wizner, Black Tornado head coach Jeff Thomas said. Senior Ashley Parker, who is normally a striker or outside midfielder, was solid on the defensive back line, he added. “We were there until the end,” Thomas said. “I am proud of the way the girls played. For 80 minutes we stayed toe-to-toe with them.” South Medford and North Medford shared for the conference title last season. GRANTS PASS 1, ROSEBURG 0: At Roseburg, Brooke Blacksmith scored the go-ahead goal on a high, looping attempt over the Roseburg goalkeeper in the 68th minute for Grants Pass in SWC action. The Cavers improved to 5-3-1 overall, 3-2 in league. Roseburg dropped to 2-6-1 overall, 1-3-1 in conference. ASHLAND 2, EAGLE POINT 0: At Eagle Point, Ianthe Balbuena-Nedrow and Facie Graham scored first-half goals for Ashland during nonleague action. Balbuena-Nedrow scored from 25 yards out in the 14th minute and Graham capitalized on a Mikaela Perry assist from 12 yards away in the 34th for Ashland (6-1-1). Lilly Patton and Calysta Susu-Mago led the Grizzlies’ defensive efforts. Goalkeeper Lupe Partida and defender Krystal Van Dyke played strong roles for Eagle Point (3-4-1). CRATER 5, ILLINOIS VALLEY 0: At Central Point, Alycea Jones and Kristina Reynolds combined to make seven saves in goal to preserve the nonleague shutout for Crater (4-4), which led 2-0 at halftime. The Comets, who entered with eight goals through seven games, received one goal apiece by Marcela Southmayd, Katie Niedermeyer, Emily McCollum, Sydney Buck and Tyler Hansen to pull away from Class 3A Illinois Valley (3-5). Boys GRANTS PASS 2, ROSEBURG 0: At Grants Pass, second-half goals by Jonathan Williams and Drew Van Delden carried Grants Pass to the SWC victory at Mel Ingram Field. The Cavemen (6-2-1, 3-1-1 SWC) broke the scoreless tie about five minutes into the second half off a long throw-in by Javier Mendoza to Kevin Luther, who flicked a pass which Williams headed in from 10 yards away. Van Delden booted a shot into the corner of the net from the top of the box off an assist from Connor Cubic in the 59th minute. Grants Pass goalie Dustin Harrah stopped a penalty kick in the first half for one of his two saves against Roseburg (0-6-2, 0-3-1), which was slowed by the play of defenders Noah Heisser and Will Nance. ASHLAND 1, EAGLE POINT 0: At Ashland, Lucas Golding guided in the go-ahead goal for Ashland in the 74th minute to deal Eagle Point (5-1-1) its first loss of the year during nonleague action at Ashland Middle School. Golding capitalized on a rebound from close range using his back heel after Bryce Rollins’ shot attempt was deflected. Gabe Lehrburger, David Lehrburger, Aidan Locklin and Lars Filson led the Grizzlies’ defensive charge. Goalkeeper Tejas Leie Heyden recorded the shutout for Ashland (4-3).
