It was the first SOC setback for the Black Tornado, which was edged out by South Medford as the league favorite in a preseason coaches poll. North (6-2-3 overall) and KU are both 3-1 in the SOC. "This makes it really difficult," said North coach Dick Darcy, "because we still have South and Roseburg to play. It’s not the position we want to be in, but we’ll still keep scrapping." North Medford has been beset by injuries. Two starters were lost in the preseason to injury; a third, sweeper Whitney Majors, went down with a broken ankle Saturday; and another, Kelly Vilarino, continues to play despite a knee injury. "It’s been a nightmare season for the players and the coach to lose so many kids to injuries," said Darcy, "and they’re all key positions." Against Klamath, North outshot the Pelicans 21-13 and played most of the game in the Pelicans’ half of the field, said Darcy. "We just never got the ball where we needed it to be," said Darcy. Majors’ absence was felt in particular when KU got free on a couple of breakaways. Karen Nagy’s goal late in the first half gave the Pelicans a 1-0 halftime lead, but Kim Tiger tied it for North at the 45th minute. Claire Edwards and Brandy Bocchi scored in a span of three minutes to put Klamath in front 3-1 after 51 minutes. Kadi Driver’s goal for North at the 68th minute ended the scoring. GRANTS PASS 6, EAGLE POINT 0 — At Eagle Point, Katie Lamont had three assists and was one of six players to score for Grants Pass in the SOC game. Kelli Briggs scored in the first minute for the Cavers (6-4-1, 2-2 SOC), and was followed with first-half goals by Courtney Cameron and Monique Barbee. In the second half, Kelli Roots, Chesney McHan and Lamont tallied. Jakki Pilcher added two assists and Allie Meier one for Grants Pass, which got strong play in the midfield from Patina Taylor and the third shutout this year by goalkeeper Karyne Sander. ASHLAND 2, ROSEBURG 0 — At Ashland, Rachel Salem and Sylvia VanAusdal scored to push Ashland to an SOC victory. Salem took a through pass from VanAusdal, weaved her way down the middle of the field and fired a 10-yard shot into the upper, left corner midway through the first half as the Grizzlies (2-2 SOC) posted a 1-0 lead at halftime. Ten minutes into the second half, VanAusdal collected a goal of her own on a one-touch through pass from Jamie Roupp. SOC Boys SOUTH MEDFORD 4, CRATER 1, OT — At Central Point, unranked Crater played SOC undefeated and sixth-ranked South Medford (9-1-1, 4-0 SOC) to a 1-1 tie in regulation, but the Panthers broke through for three goals in the first of two 10-minute overtime periods. Josh Williams gave South the lead three minutes into the extra period. Williams one-touched in a side volley from 14 yards off a throw-in by David Lane. Just one minute later, junior forward Corey O’Neill beat a defender and slipped a shot inside the far post from about 14 yards. Spencer Hunter set up the play by getting past several Comet players at midfield and dished off to O’Neill. Daniel Hathaway converted off a pass from Daniel Potter to complete the scoring six minutes into the overtime. In regulation, Potter gave the Panthers the initial lead on a penalty kick at the eighth minute. Crater tied the game about midway through the first half on a direct kick from about 25 yards by senior captain Todd Sesock. The Comets came close to winning the game in regulation when a shot bounced off the crossbar and Sesock’s rebound shot sailed high with 90 seconds remaining. South Medford sophomore goalkeeper Mike Belzberg played a strong game by coming out of the goal to get the ball in crowded situations four different times. KLAMATH UNION 4, NORTH MEDFORD 1 — At Klamath Falls, Ian Norgan put North Medford up early, but Klamath Union rallied in the SOC contest. Norgan scored for the Black Tornado (3-8, 1-3 SOC) at nine minutes on an assist from Andres Kendig. The Pelicans answered when Tyler Casey tallied at the 30th minute on a cross from Ricardo Guerrero. Jon Fay’s penalty kick put KU up 2-1 four minutes before halftime. Despite what coach Rich Garcia called one of its better games, North was victimized by an own goal at the 55th minute, then Guerrero one-timed a corner kick after it caromed off the Tornado goalkeeper in the 75th. North’s Brandon Driver did a nice job of marking Guerrero, and Scott Reed and Norgan played well defensively. GRANTS PASS 8, EAGLE POINT 0 — It only took one half for Sten Erickson to post a hat trick as Grants Pass picked up an SOC win. The Cavemen (5-6, 3-1 SOC) got two scores from Kelly Skustad and one from James Evans to take a 6-0 lead at the half. Jason Shaw staked the Cavemen to the final margin with two second-half scores. Josh Swanburg had three assists for the Cavemen, while Shaw contributed two. Erickson and Collin Hackett each supplied one assist. ASHLAND 4, ROSEBURG 0 — At Roseburg, sophomore Fabian Garcia-Flores scored a pair of first-half goals and Ashland withstood two dangerous attacks by Roseburg (5-6, 1-3 SOC) in the first five minutes. Garcia-Flores headed in a cross by Trevor Peterson at the 23rd minute, then used his head to score off an indirect kick from Alex Christlieb for a 2-0 halftime lead. Jacob VanAusdall tallied unassisted 12 minutes into the second half, then Matt Sharp completed the scoring on a penalty kick near the end of the game. Tony Laughlin and Andrew Christlieb combined for the shutout in net for Ashland (5-3, 2-2 SOC).
