Medford looks at financing for sidewalks Hearing WHO : Medford City Council WHAT : Public hearing on proposal to shift funding for sidewalk work from West Eighth Street to Geneva and Minnesota streets in east Medford. WHEN : 7 p.m. WHERE : Medford City Hall, 411 W. Eighth St. The Medford City Council will consider tonight whether the city should move federal money from a sidewalk project in west Medford to a historic district in east Medford. The city staff is proposing moving the $26,440 in federal Housing and Urban Development funds from a project to repair and build sidewalks on West Eighth Street to repair sidewalks on Minnesota and Geneva avenues. One woman and the West Medford Community Coalition have objected to the idea. Elaine Meade, who lives in the historic district on Minnesota, said in a letter to the city that she was visited by City Manager Michael Dyal on a Neighborhood Walk, a program in which city officials stop by the homes of residents to listen to their concerns. Meade wrote that she enjoys living in Medford, but said she told Dyal the only problem she had was that she stubs her toes regularly on evening walks because the sidewalks near her home are uneven. Even so, Meade urged the City Council to keep the sidewalk money on Eighth Street, because she said that was a priority. West Medford Coalition leaders also wrote a letter, saying that money spent on sidewalks on Geneva and Minnesota would not benefit the low-income neighborhoods surrounding the historic district.
