In the fight, members of the rival Norteños and Sureños gangs attacked each other with a fillet knife, a butcher knife, a pocket knife, a baseball bat, a golf club, punches and kicks. Marco Antonio Diaz was stabbed in the chest with the fillet knife. Juan Antonio Gonzalez-Marquez, who was 14 at the time, joined with another gang member to chase down the wounded Diaz, who fell to the ground and was punched and kicked in the head and along his body by the pair. Diaz, 24, later died. Gonzalez-Marquez pleaded guilty to second-degree assault after the bloody battle and was sentenced to up to 10 years of detention by the Oregon Youth Authority in 2010. He ran away from the Haag Home for Boys, a residential treatment program in Junction City, in August 2014 but was captured by Jackson County sheriff's deputies and U.S. marshals the following month. It is unclear from court records what Gonzalez-Marquez has been doing since then. On Tuesday, a man in west Medford was shot in a gang-related shooting near Union Park. Police arrested Gonzalez-Marquez an hour after the shooting. Gonzalez-Marquez, now age 20 and a resident of Berrydale Avenue in Medford, was arraigned Wednesday on two counts of attempted murder, first-degree assault, attempted first-degree assault and two counts of unlawful use of a firearm. He remains lodged in the Jackson County Jail on $1 million bail. The attempted murder and first-degree assault charges each carry mandatory minimum sentences of 7½ years in prison upon conviction under Oregon Measure 11 sentencing law. The shooting victim, 22-year-old Alex Adrian Enriquez, was in critical condition at a local hospital on Wednesday but was upgraded to serious condition Thursday, according to Medford police. He was shot in the upper torso and leg while standing on a sidewalk in the 1300 block of Prune Street. The shooter reportedly fired from a car. A passerby with prior military combat experience was able to render aid, as he had medical supplies with him, police said. Back in 2009, the deadly fight was triggered when Diaz — the man ultimately killed in the brawl — and fellow Sureños gang members sought out a Norteños gang member who had stabbed Diaz's younger brother in 2008 and served 30 days in jail for the assault. Diaz, who came armed with a baseball bat, was stabbed twice in the chest by a Norteños gang member who later pleaded guilty to second-degree manslaughter and was sentenced to up to 10 years of detention by the Oregon Youth Authority. That Norteños gang member, Mauricio Humberto Teran — like suspected west Medford shooter Gonzalez-Marquez — was only 14 years old at the time. Prosecutors said Teran had joined in the fight while carrying a baton, but picked up a knife that fell out of another person's pocket and stabbed Diaz. Several other gang members, ages 19 and 20, were sentenced to 4½ years in prison for their roles in the fight. West Medford has experienced four drive-by shootings in the past month. Tuesday's shooting was the first in which someone was struck by a bullet. Several arrests have been made in the cases. Police are continuing to investigate and hunt suspects.
