Coast Guard suspends search for missing fishermen Comment MailTribune.com Writer Posted Jan. 21, 2016 at 9:12 AM Posted Jan. 21, 2016 at 9:12 AM » Social News from The World COOS BAY — The U.S. Coast Guard indefinitely suspended its search for two missing fishermen Wednesday, a day after their vessel, the Eagle III, collided with the north jetty of the entrance to Coos Bay and capsized. Capt. Michael Timpert, commander of Sector North Bend, made the decision after searchers were unable to find any sign of the two men, Petty Officer 3rd Class Amanda Norcross said. Norcross said neither of the two missing crew members were wearing a flotation device, and an inflatable life raft was on the vessel but not deployed. At about 1 a.m. Wednesday, crews found the body of one fisherman on the north jetty, said Lt. Jesse Cremeans of Sector North Bend's public affairs office. Names have not yet been released. In an email statement, Norcross said it is against Coast Guard policy to release names "except in very specific circumstances where the release of the name would aid in a case." One of the four fishermen made it to shore Tuesday, and was picked up by a good Samaritan and dropped off at Air Station North Bend. The Eagle III is registered to Leesa Cobb of Port Orford, and was owned by her husband, Darrell Cobb, who died from cancer in September. Glenn Burkow is listed as the boat's captain. The Eagle III was a 40-foot fishing vessel, built in 1978 and weighing 18 gross tons. The Coast Guard reported that the Eagle III crew was crabbing in Charleston. Watchstanders at the Coast Guard District 13 Command Center were notified of the vessel in distress at 8:30 p.m. Tuesday after they picked up a signal from an electronic position indicating radio beacon, which prompted the launch of both the helicopter and the MLB crews. Initial reports were that the vessel capsized a mile off the entrance of Coos Bay, but further information indicated the vessel collided with the jetty. Weather on scene at the time of the incident was reported as 31 mph winds and 8- to 10-foot seas.
