Vikings top Pirates for Skyline dual title Wednesday Jan 31, 2018 at 2:00 AM Feb 1, 2018 at 12:27 AM PHOENIX — Mazama picked up key victories between state ranked wrestlers at 138 and 145 to beat Phoenix 44-28 and claim the Skyline Conference Duals championship Wednesday at Phoenix High School. The six-team meet played out over two days — Jan. 10 in Klamath Falls and Wednesday — and the Vikings finished 5-0 to seize the league’s first-place trophy and some momentum heading into next week’s regional championships. “Our team goal is to be in the top five in the state,” Phoenix coach Jon Gay said. “Mazama is a tough team and at regional next weekend we should have a good showing.” Phoenix also beat North Valley 45-18 Wednesday, clinching a second-place showing for the Pirates after previous wins over Henley, Hidden Valley and Klamath Union. Mazama 138-pounder Kaden Wood pinned Phoenix’s Mike Walker in 2 minutes, 59 seconds to give the Vikings six big points, and Mazama’s Bowen Browder followed with a 13-4 major decision over Dalton Samis as the Vikings pulled off back-to-back swing match victories. Phoenix 113-pounder Ezra DeLuca beat Mazama’s Jonah Kugler by major decision 13-5 to wrap up an undefeated Skyline campaign. Also for Phoenix, heavyweight Ishmael DeLaTorre pinned Mazama counterpart Jordan Friel in only 25 seconds, and 195-pounder Dane Johnson went 4-1 in Skyline duals, including three pins. BOYS BASKETBALL PACIFIC 47, CASCADE CHRISTIAN 43: At Port Orford, Pacific only managed three field goals in the second half but one of the top Class 1A teams in the state survived thanks to a big day at the free throw line in nonleague action at Pacific High. Senior wing Joel McLemore scored 12 points and senior forward Ben Dunn 11 for the Challengers (12-8), who did not attempt a free throw. Pacific (20-2), which extended its win streak to 13 games, was led by Jack Lehnherr’s 18 points. CASCADE CHRISTIAN (43): Reece 2, Dunn 11, H. Schaan 4, K.
