Kiesling, head of the Gold Hill Whitewater Center, is trying to put together at least one four-person team to compete with the perennial winners from Colorado during the event scheduled for April 2-3. "We're hoping to get some teams competing and eventually go to the world championships, but we've got to beat Colorado first," Kiesling says. "They're serious. They train." Kiesling and others are planning a 6 p.m. meeting Wednesday at Sawyer Station in Gold Hill to gather interested paddlers who either bring a team with them or who are interested in joining a team. About a dozen teams are expected to take part in the championships, which will open April 2 at Ti'lomikh Falls upstream of Gold Hill, where two sets of slalom gates will be suspended over the whitewater for separate slalom and head-to-head events, Kiesling says. The following day will be a timed downriver event in the Klamath. For the events, SOTAR is building six identical 14-foot racing rafts for the competitors to use, and Sawyer Paddles and Oars will have racing paddles for training, Kiesling says. For more information about the rafting association and national championships, see www.usaraftassociation.com/ 2016 trout stocking begins Spring came early last week for Josephine County anglers visiting Reinhart Pond in Grants Pass and Selmac Lake near Selma. Those two waterbodies were stocked with legal-sized rainbow trout last week, the opening salvo to the spring and summer trout-stocking season in Southern Oregon. Reinhart Pond received 300 rainbows while Lake Selmac saw 3,000 fresh trout stocked at the boat ramp, hatchery Manager David Pease says. These water bodies usually are stocked early for anglers because their shallow features make them too warm for survival of newly planted rainbows in the summer. Jackson County's trout stocking does not begin until the week of March 7, when Emigrant Lake east of Ashland will get its first 1,000 legal-sized rainbows of the season, while Lost Creek lake will get 15,000 trout and Willow Lake near Butte Falls is scheduled to receive 4,000 legal-sized rainbows. Also that week, Lake Selmac will get another 5,000 rainbows and Reinhart Pond will get 300 more trout. All the trout have been grown to the eight-inch minimum size to be kept as part of the five-trout daily limit. Trout-stocking schedules for all of Oregon are available at the Oregon Department of Fish and Wildlife's home page at www.dfw.state.or.us . Once there, click on the "Fishing" pull-down menu and then click on "Trout Stocking Schedule" for the schedules broken down by watershed.
