Two years ago, Medford's mayor and other city leaders expressed concern about the appearance of the heavy equipment repair shop that sits adjacent on the edge of The Commons, Medford's urban renewal-funded park blocks between Sixth Street and Fourth Street. Now, it's Christian's Pharmacy, north of Fourth Street and adjacent to two lots the Jennings Company is using to store equipment. The pharmacy's owner says his customers complain about the unsightly equipment storage he says surrounds his business. Dan Reisinger, who runs Sam Jennings, says he no longer feels welcome. Reisinger's family are descendants of Sam Jennings, who founded the company in 1923 and then moved it to the white building at Fourth and Riverside known as "The Alamo." Reisinger took steps to clean up around the property when complaints surfaced in 2013. Now, he says the business is as clean as it's ever going to be. A business that does heavy equipment repair, specializing in brakes, clutches and hydraulic systems, is going to look like what it is, and axles, dump beds and other big pieces of heavy equipment need to be stored somewhere while waiting to be repaired. The lots next to the pharmacy previously were leased by Lithia Motors and held cars. Now they hold equipment. The property is zoned community commercial, which means permitted uses include service stations and repair shops — in other words, what Sam Jennings Co. is using it for. There is a limit to what the city can do to force a private business to change permitted uses on its own property. The Reisingers have made no secret of their desire to sell all the property, but they won't unless they get what they consider a fair price. Those who object to the repair shop's appearance can learn to live with it, or take a business-oriented approach to the situation: Make an offer.
